National Youth Film Festival – Short Film Entry
The film has now been submitted online. There had to be a 50 word synopsis, which is a short description of the film’s story – and a 50 word paragraph on the reasons why the film was made.

The film has now been submitted online. There had to be a 50 word synopsis, which is a short description of the film’s story – and a 50 word paragraph on the reasons why the film was made.
Synopsis:
‘Run school run’ is a very good film for all of us to enjoy. The reason why is because all the other children that are our age will be entertained. Also we have put in a lot of effort to make it a really good horror film. I enjoyed the part when I got to run away from Clone Clara. I was able to run really fast and that is when I developed as the main character. Also the other people that were in the group put in a lot of effort for this movie. What I learned is that it’s very entertaining for me to do the acting, but the directing and everything else was really special, not just to me but for all of the group as it meant a lot to them. Before I never, ever knew how to make a movie on a tablet and knew nothing about editing, so thanks to everyone including DJess and others.
It was good, enjoyable it taught me some things. It helped me with technology; it helped me to make films. Anything I found hard there was someone to help me with. It was a good experience it encouraged me to always edit your movie, it gave me patience. It was brilliant. I am enjoying using ipads to film and to use imovie. I liked being the director because people followed your orders and I think I was good at it because people listened to me. I liked being an actor, also in fact I would say that I enjoyed experiencing all the roles. The movie was good, it could have more added, a bit more humour and action in it, but overall it was a good movie. I was surprised that people laughed at it, perhaps it could have been a bit scarier. It would have been interesting to have some talking in the movie.
In clip club it was fun because we make lots of videos and we watch animations. This gave us lots of ideas to make our movie. I particularly liked being the cameraman because you get to use the camera and take lots of footage. I learned that film making is not about having the same role all the time and I enjoyed being assistant director as you get to boss people around and using the clip board was good fun.
This was made in tagul.com – it’s free and it checks out the most used words on your site and creates a graphic from them. wordle.net and tagxedo.com do the same thing without you having to sign up with your email. We can talk about this next time. More clouds here.
The Clip Clubbers are back! What a great turn out to the first session of the year.
Michelle talks about a new national film festival – The National Youth Film Festival, or NYFF for short – to which we can submit our film. At first they said it had to be no more than 3 minutes, so we came to the session ready to edit it down. Michelle then noticed that they’d changed the rules extending it to a maximum of 10 minutes, so we’re now leaving it as it is. There’s also a category for “Best Film Club”, so we’ll enter that too. See below for how this will work… and how you clip clubbers can help.
As the session plan has changed, Michelle thinks it’s a good idea to get to grips with the school’s new iPads. This is met with uncontainable excitement! After a short demonstration on the whiteboard about how the iPads work, Michelle gives the group a loose brief to interview each other about the making of “Run School Run!”.
We establish that ‘making of’ films include interviews on characters, locations and the different roles people have. The three pairs find a space and start filming and experimenting.
After about 15 minutes, they all come back and we look at the footage. Sadly Michelle’s iPad and the school’s iPads are a bit different so the connector to the whiteboard doesn’t work, so we all crowd round the iPad screens.
It was good fun experimenting with the new devices and we’ll see what can be done with the footage next time. Maybe we can store it in Dropbox folders, so that it doesn’t matter which iPad you work with next time, you’ll always have your clips online to download where ever OR on whatever device you have to hand.
By the way – if anyone wants to fill in this NYFF_Best Film Club_Application Form_2013 about the club so we can discuss it together quickly next time, then great! There are 2 main questions to be thinking about: What makes your club great? (no more than 100 words) & Why should your club win this award? (no more than 100 words).
See you next week!
We had the KS2 screening in the hall followed by the Bloopers and the Q & A. It all went very well and the children asked some interesting questions about how and why there were 2 Claras (Ellens). There was also some discussion about filming a film within a film and they did a good job of explaining how in film you can suggest and imply things rather than show and tell the story literally. Some children now want to join the club next year.

W – O – W – !
Great job to everyone in the Clip Club! Having watched our film yesterday, I can reveal that it is AMAZING! We all worked really hard to produce our final film which will be screened on Tuesday for KS2. I also watched the bloopers, which we will show after the film, followed by a Q & A session in the hall.
WELL DONE EVERYONE!

Film still: Wizard 23 at the end of a take, running upstairs, being filmed by Dual2 and photographed by Gman
It is decided that the final film – and the blooper clips – will be shown at the assembly in the final week of term. So Michelle gets to work polishing the edit with some iMovie sound effects. The group gets to see the final edit and suggests a few amendments which includes some accidental editing at the end of the film that we decide to keep. Wizard23 has been busy with Mr. Peppard deciding on where to put the film posters and organising a screening of the trailer on the outdoor screen as children enter the school.
We also watch Nimbus’s filmed homework: the Mentos and Coke experiment in the park. He had decided to film the experiment with family and friends rather than write about it.
Everyone is quite sad to be finishing the project and wants to carry on next year! We’ll miss DJess because she’s going to secondary school but the others can perhaps carry on and welcome some Year 5s into the group.
What a brilliant time we’ve had! Why not make some comments if you enjoyed this project!
Will post the final film and bloopers after the premiere.
We split into 2 groups – one shooting the final scene and the other starting to edit in a group on the smart board. There are varying degrees of success with this strategy. A way to end the film hasn’t at this point been established but in the short time available, the final scene is created and shot – featuring Dual2 innocently reattaching the cable to the computer; this makes for a cliff-hanger ending.
The clips had already been put in a certain order on the timeline in iMovie and so the other group starts looking at how best to cut these clips to tell the story in as dramatic and engaging a way as possible. The clips are all very long at this point and it means detecting the best bits and really cutting out everything that is not necessary to the story. This is quite difficult but it’s vital to make the story move along and keep the audience with us.
At the end of the session we upload the ‘ending’ and watch the cut so far.
We try to get more shots outside in the playground but take a long time to get going and it’s all a bit disorganised. We do however manage to get a few mid and close-up shots of Clone Ellen on the climbing frame and running away. Next time there will have to be 2 or 3 groups working to get things moving along:
1) camera crew filming the last shots
2) editing team starting on the footage we’ve got already
3) sound editor(s) collecting sounds around the school on a voice recorder
DJess comes up with a great idea about the Clone losing energy at the same time as the computer’s battery runs out – and cutting to the computer battery in the edit, gradually reducing to 0%.
